Plug-in hybrid, open top Mitsubishi MI-TECH SUV to be revealed later this month at Tokyo Motor Show

Mitsubishi MI-TECH teaser

Mitsubishi will unwrap a new, open-topped plug-in hybrid SUV concept at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show, called the MI-TECH.

Mitsubishi has only issued a typical shadowy teaser image for now, but like the Engelberg Tourer Concept from the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, the new concept is likely to be a future technology showcase rather than a direct preview of an upcoming new model.

From the teaser we can see that design-wise, the Mitsubishi MI-TECH concept appears to draw inspiration from traditional off-road SUVs and convertible sports cars in equal measure. Its flared wheel arches and flat bonnet evoke the previous-generation Land Rover Defender, while its raked windscreen and flying buttresses are hints of Mazda MX-5 RF.

The concept’s cabin is completely exposed to the elements, there doesn’t appear to be any doors or stowable roof either. Once Mitsubishi issues a more detailed image of the MI-TECH’s nose, we expect to find a flamboyant interpretation of Mitsubishi’s ‘Dynamic Shield’ radiator grille and bumper design, similar to that seen on the Engelberg Tourer.

The MI-TECH concept is powered by a lightweight gas-turbine engine-generator and an all-electric four-wheel-drive system. The powertrain features a pair of electric motors on each axle and an Active Yaw Control system, which Mitsubishi says allows the optimum amount of torque to be delivered to each wheel depending on the road conditions.

Mitsubishi’s MI-TECH concept will also preview the Japanese brand’s new augmented reality windscreen and MI-PILOT driver assistance system. The former system projects a range of driving information onto the front screen, while the latter can assume control of the car’s steering wheel and brakes to help the driver avoid collisions.

The Japanese brand’s 2019 Tokyo Motor Show stand will also feature the Engelberg Tourer Concept and an all-new compact MPV concept called the Super Height K-Wagon. Visitors to the show will also be able to view the MI-TECH concept in a series of interactive displays and virtual reality demonstrations.
