Audi's new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe rival spied for the first time, expected to arrive next year

With the arrival of an all-new Audi A4 imminent, Audi is well underway with development on the swish new A5 . Spied for first time, the sleek coupe will share all of its mechanical running gear with the A4 saloon but adopt a more rakish, coupe body.

Although completely disguised, the test mule appears to be the shorter three-door model. As with the current A5, a larger five-door Sportback version will also be offered, featuring a longer wheelbase. The A5 will mirror the front end look of the new A4, with a curvier roofline and slightly exaggerated proportions. The headlights, front bumper and grille of the prototype appear slightly inflated in size compared to A4 test mule which also appears in the images.

Proportionally, the A5 will remain largely the same as the current model, but sharp new LED head and tail lamps can be picked out beneath the disguise, along with the more pronounced flanks and rear haunches.

Facing opposition from the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe and forthcoming Mercedes C-Class Coupe, the A5 will continue to follow the recipe used by the upcoming A4 with a focus on sharper driving dynamics thanks to the new MLB platform and brand new engines. The new platform will also help shed around 100kg of weight, further boosting performance and efficiency, while new multi-link rear suspension, adaptive dampers and slick nine-speed automatic gearbox will also mean a step forward in terms of refinement.

All engines will be shared with the A4, meaning options will range from a 1.4 TFSI petrol with cylinder shutdown tech to a powerful 3.0 TDI diesel. Audi’s commitment with plug-in hybrid technology will also extend to the A5, with an e-tron version able to travel 30 miles on battery power alone. We can expect S5 and, ultimately, RS5 performance versions to arrive in due course.

Following on from A5 Coupe will be the larger A5 Sportback and drop-top A5 Cabriolet, with a debut for the new model line-up not expected until the Geneva Motor Show next year.
