Vauxhall has confirmed that its rugged Insignia Country Tourer has been withdrawn from the UK market “with immediate effect”.
The 4x4 estate was only launched back in 2013 and will continue to be produced for left-hand drive buyers, but a spokesman for the Luton-based firm claimed the decision to stop RHD production was “entirely down to volumes”.
The standard Insignia Sports Tourer is now available with Vauxhall’s new ‘Whisper’ 2.0-litre CDTI diesel engine, a requirement to comply with impending Euro-6 emissions regulations. But the “significant engineering investment” of converting this engine to run with four-wheel drive in right-hand drive markets wouldn’t be justified by the small numbers of UK sales of the Country Tourer.
It was also not deemed necessary to offer the VW Passat Alltrack rival in two-wheel drive, given its off-road intentions and raised ride height.
Vauxhall says the decision will not affect the other four-wheel drive models in the range, the Antara and Mokka. The Mokka is now available with a smaller Euro-6 prepared Whisper diesel, while the Antara is likely to get the 2.0-litre unit from the Insignia range soon in order to comply with the regulations.
For those still looking to get their hands on a Country Tourer in the UK, dealers are still able to sell off their remaining examples of them while stocks last.
