Nissan will be jumping on the driverless car bandwagon at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show next month with a new autonomous electric car concept. It's expected to be a joint venture with Renault, and could also show what to expect from the next Leaf EV.
Back in March, the boss of the Renault Nissan Alliance Carlos Ghosn, told us fully autonomous models from both manufacturers will be on the road by 2020. But rather than a totally self-driving vehicle, the production car will still require occasional driver input and feature a steering wheel and pedals.
Although details of this concept are scarce so far, Nissan's design boss Shiro Nakamura told Auto Express that we can expect so see something at Tokyo regarding the next Leaf, and this is likely to be it. Although in concept form, the next Leaf could be with us in 2017.
The teaser image doesn't give much away, but it shows a car similar in design to the Micra-previewing Sway concept, but with a sleeker profile and coupe-like rear. That front grille shape will debut on the production Micra first, before it is rolled out across Nissan's range in the next few years.
It's also not clear if it will eventually be rebodied and badged as a Renault, but we expect more details when we head out to Tokyo next week.
