Citroen showcases C4 Cactus-based concept with hydraulic suspension and comfort-boosting seat design

Citroen may have turned its back on its hydropneumatic suspension system of late, but it's set to debut a revolutionary replacement. The 'Advanced Comfort Concept' showcases a new hydraulic system for future production.

Based on the current C4 Cactus crossover, the concept is fitted with an all-new setup using two "progressive hydraulic cushions" in addition to the regular system of springs and shocks. The cushions, fitted to the top and bottom of each suspension unit - are tuned for rebound and compression respectively.

The new system is designed to damp vertical movement gradually rather than abruptly, absorbing and dissipating the energy on big bumps rather than seeing it hit the bump stops. Citroen claims it delivers the "magic carpet ride" that the old system offered, but is much more cost-effective to produce and fit.

It's also claimed it can be added to Citroen models from the city car segment and above, as opposed to the hydropneumatic system that was recently exclusive to larger models.

New body building techniques - such as structural bonding - will also increase overall stiffness and improve ride comfort further. Citroen claims the car can be around 20 per cent more rigid as a result.

In addition, the Advanced Comfort Concept debuts a brand new seating design inside, with chairs inspired by bedding and using a type of 'memory foam' mattress technology.

The announcement makes bold claims about the use of these technologies in future models, saying they "deliver a statement of intent to roll-out the technology across the entire range, whatever the price of the model".
