FCA (Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles) and gearbox manufacturer ZF have announced a recall of models fitted with its nine-speed automatic gearbox. The recall, originally related to 500,000 US vehicles, affects cars including the Jeep Renegade and Cherokee, which will be recalled in the UK.
Other models that use ZF's nine-speed automatic gearbox include the Honda CR-V, Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque, but no recall notices have been issued (so far) for these models. Honda has confirmed that the CR-V is not involved, but Land Rover is yet to comment.

The only UK brand that has confirmed a recall for the gearbox fix so far is Jeep. A spokesperson told Auto Express that around 1,400 examples of the Renegade and Cherokee will be recalled here for a free dealer software fix that bypasses the wiring affected. Owners that are affected will have been notified already.
The fault relates to a crimp in the cars' wiring harness that can cause the gearbox to select neutral without any prompt from the driver. The recall affects models from Jeep, but is unrelated to FCA's recall to modify the gear selector design that has caused a number of cars to roll away resulting in injuries. That fault is believed to be a factor in the death of Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin.
