New version of electric VW e-Golf has been revealed in Los Angeles

The new version of the Volkswagen e-Golf has been revealed at the LA Motor Show 2016, with more range, more power and more equipment.

It joins the recently-revealed VW Golf range, and has an updated look to match: the closed-off front-end features a stripe that runs over into the LED headlights, and there's a set of C-shaped daytime running lights on the front bumper as well. At the back, the e-Golf gets a new bumper design, LED taillights, animated indicator lights and a new brake light design.

The range of the new e-Golf has been boosted by about 50 per cent to 186 miles, and power is up by about 20bhp to 134bhp. Torque is also up by 20Nm to 290Nm, which helps the e-Golf accelerate from 0-62mph in 9.6 seconds.

Volkswagen says the power consumption is unchanged despite the gains in power, and the larger batteries mean it's able to go longer distances on a single charge.

Alongside other updates from the new Golf range revealed recently, the e-Golf gets an all-digital instrument display and gesture control for the infotainment system. Online 'e-remote' services are standard too, which lets owners set air-con remotely and stop/start electric charging as well.

New safety systems on the e-Golf include traffic jam assist, emergency assist and forward pedestrian monitoring.

The new VW Golf range is expected to go on sale in early 2017, with the e-Golf version likely to cost from around £32,000 before the government plug-in car grant.
