2017 has been a big year for the Vauxhall Insignia with the introduction of the new Insignia Grand Sport – the firm’s all-new Skoda Superb rival – at the Geneva Motor Show. It’s intended to turn up the quality dial and improve Vauxhall’s brand image, and will be joined by an estate bodied variant called the Insignia Sports Tourer later this year.
However, our spy photographers have snapped evidence that a third new Insignia will appear too. It’s a variant of the Insignia Sport Tourer estate, and the raised ride height and zebra masking suggests this is a rugged, off-road inspired version of Vauxhall’s new executive estate, possibly called the Insignia Country Tourer.
• Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport review
A rival for the VW Passat Alltrack and Skoda Octavia Scout, the new model comes as no great surprise – Vauxhall did a Country Tourer version of the previous generation Insignia, axeing it from the range in 2015.
The spy shots suggest plenty of rugged black plastic cladding line the car’s bumpers, wheelarches and side skirts, while like on the previous generation Country Tourer, the lights will be mounted in distinctive new housing. The ride height appears taller too.
The previous Insignia Country Tourer was offered with all-wheel-drive as standard. Should this model follow suit it’ll make use of the most powerful turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine producing 256bhp – that’s currently the only power unit available with all-wheel-drive. However, a diesel option will inevitably be part of Vauxhall’s plans.
Judging by these spy shots a reveal shouldn’t be too far away – the covers should be off by the end of 2017. Given the Country Tourer is a high-spec Insignia model, it should start from significantly more than the £18,615 of the standard Sports Tourer estate.
