With the Bentayga SUV on the horizon and the Continental GT receiving updates this year, it's no surprise that the Bentley Mulsanne range will get an update, too. Our spy pictures show the updated luxury model hitting the track, with a long-wheelbase version in its wake.
We've previously spotted the extended Mulsanne sliding about in snowy conditions, but now it's forced even more out of its comfort zone as testers hurl the mammoth saloon round the Nurburgring race circuit in Germany. It's almost entirely without disguise, but we don't know if the stretched car will reach Europe.
The giant rear doors give away the extra length added to the wheelbase, bringing around 200mm of extra rear legroom. Given that rivals such as Mercedes and Rolls-Royce have long-wheelbase versions of their flagship saloons, Bentley is playing catch-up in this respect. It's primarily tipped to improve sales in China and the Middle East.
Also testing alongside the long-wheelbase Mulsanne is a lightly disguised version of the standard-sized saloon, hinting at expected updates for the 2017 model year. Minor tweaks to the exterior styling, including a revised grille and air intake and new light designs all-round, will complement cabin and tech updates from the Bentayga.
The old-school twin-turbocharged 6.75-litre V8 should remain untouched in both the regular and Speed versions. But given it looks like the Bentayga will received both diesel and plug-in hybrid options, we wouldn't be surprised if a new powertrain makes its way underneath that long bonnet in time.
