New Fiat 500 revealed on 4 July

Fiat 500 new and old

Brand-new city car will be unveiled next month, rivalling new MINI and Audi A1

Fiat has today confirmed its new 500 city car will be revealed on 4 July – exactly 58 years after the original was launched to the Italian public. It’s also eight years to the day since the brand’s modern reinvention was first showcased back in 2007.

No more official information is available at the moment, but as we uncovered last year, the next-generaton 500 is expected to be wider, longer and squatter than before, with subtle yet noticeable tweaks to the exterior. Inside is where the bulk of the changes will be made, with a large central touchscreen and minimalist dashboard design.

With its sights set firmly on US-market expansion, Fiat will make the new 500 bigger and more rugged – using a scaled-down 500X-style design. Expect larger, oval LED headlamps, oversized rear light clusters and a more bulbous side profile, as well as bigger alloy wheels, and side rubbing strips for a more masculine appearance. However, much like BMW’s evolution of the MINI, the 500’s overall shape will still be recognisable as the tiny Fiat city car.

Engines should mirror the current line-up, albeit with tweaks to the internals to make them more efficient and cheaper to run. That means the popular TwinAir will no doubt return more than 75mpg (compared to 70.6mpg in the outgoing car), while the 1.3-litre diesel could boast as much as 90mpg with sub-85g/km CO2 emissions.

Fiat will hope to continue the success of the current car, which has sold more than one million units to date. Fiat claims there are over 500,000 different personalisation configurations – a feature that is only likely to grow with the next-generation car.

We’ll have more information about the all-new Fiat 500 in the coming weeks, before the car is fully revealed on 4 July.
