New BMW trademark applications for the iX1 to iX9 model names suggest more electric SUVs are on the way

Best 4x4s and SUVs - BMW X3

BMW’s aggressive roll-out of new electric vehicles shows no sign of letting up. The German brand has trademarked every badge from iX1 to iX9, indicating that a raft of new electric SUVs could be on the horizon.

So far, the only electric 4x4 BMW has confirmed for production is a fully electric version of the new X3. The recent trademark applications give us our best indication yet as to how this model will be badged when it arrives in showrooms in 2019, with the BMW iX3 name clearly on the cards.

The naming strategy for the iX3 suggests BMW’s future electric SUVs will be based on existing models, like the X3, rather than being bespoke electric vehicles in their own right - like the i3. This would be at odds with the strategy that rivals Audi, Jaguar and Mercedes have all taken with their stand-alone e-tron, i-Pace and EQC SUVs respectively but the BMW electric SUVs will still sit under the established BMW i electric car brand.

Another of BMW’s future EVs will be a production version of the Vision Dynamics Concept that was revealed at the September’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Set to go into production in 2020, the saloon is expected to take on the i5 name and will give the German brand a direct rival for the Tesla Model S. The concept had a range of 373 miles and could hit 0-62mph in four seconds according to BMW.
